LM7808 Pinout, Equivalent, Uses, Specs

LM7808 Description

LM7808 is a positive voltage regulator IC that provides fixed output of 8V DC. The IC is available in TO-220 package and it is produced by many electronic components manufacturers. It is the IC of LM78xx series LM78xx series contains many other fixed voltage ICs like LM7805, LM7806, LM7809, LM7810, LM7812LM7815 & LM7824. One of the main advantage of these voltage regulators is that no matter if the input voltage is fluctuating they will provide fixed voltage at the output but the input voltage should not be less than the minimum required voltage of the ICs. The Input voltage in any condition must be 2V to 3V higher than the output voltage.

To get stable 8V output from LM7808 as discussed above it is suggested that the input voltage must be at least 2 to 3V higher than the output voltage. The IC is a DC device so the input voltage must be DC. Additionally to get 1.5A at the output the input current should be at least 2A.

Replacement and Equivalent / Other Part Numbers

LM2940-08, LM340-8.0. If there is no equivalent available then you can also use adjustable voltage regulators like LM317, LM338, LM1084 etc and set them at 8V fixed output.

How to Safely Long Run in a Circuit

To get best and long term performance from LM7808 do not drive more than 1.5A load with it, make sure to use a suitable heatsink with the IC, do not provide input voltage more than 40V DC and always operate in temperature above 0 centigrade and below +125 centigrade. And store at temperature between -65 centigrade to +150 centigrade.
